New Yorkers are waiting hours for this freaky new ice creamBy Haley GoldbergAugust 28, 2015 | 6:00amS’mores Galore is mixed with graham crackers and chocolate and topped with Teddy Grahams, a blowtorched marshmallow and more.Photo: Kristy LeibowitzIt’s only 6 p.m. on a Wednesday, but 10Below ice cream shop in Chinatown has already sold out of its most popular flavor — I Love You a Latte, which blends Stumptown cold-brew coffee with chocolate chips.And yet Edis Kandic, 24, of Astoria, still has to wait 30 minutes for an Oreo-packed Cookie Monster in a paper cup.“Last Thursday I tried to get it, but I waited 30 or 40 minutes without the line moving!” says Kandic, who had first seen the ice cream on his Instagram feed.Ever since it opened in July, tucked between Chinese restaurants and spas at 10 Mott St., foodies from far and wide have been waiting up to three hours to get a taste of 10Below, which serves an American twist on Thai ice cream rolls.The frozen concoction is created by pouring liquid homemade ice cream onto a cold plate reaching temps well below zero. Employees mix in toppings, flatten it out like a crepe, and then scrape it into ice-cold rolls with a putty-knife-like tool. The result is five cute little rolls with toppings ranging from fresh strawberries to a blowtorched marshmallow and Teddy Grahams. (The store offers eight different flavor combinations, each $7 including tax.)

Combine that idea with a churro and you’ve got something extra special.Based on the popular donut created by Afters Ice Cream, Amy Erickson of Oh, Bite It made her own version of the Milky Bun by replacing the traditional donut for a Pillsbury grands biscuit.Erickson pan fried the biscuit so it created a donut-like consistency. Keep it movin’, Mister Softee.This summer, soft-serve ice cream options in New York are anything but vanilla.Think intense, complex flavors like burrata cheese, gianduja chocolate, strawberry jalapeño and horchata.“I really love the texture of soft-serve, but I always wished it had more flavor,” says Cronut king Dominique Ansel, who last week launched an ice cream window at his West Village dessert shop Dominique Ansel Kitchen.“Most soft serve is made with a mix or powder, but I wanted to use fresh ingredients — simple, quality flavors that we all love,” he adds.
