About George Dunlap

1973 my parents opened their ice cream store called Peppermint Patti's in Defiance, OH. We served soft ice cream/custard and hand scooped ice cream. During my years at Bowling Green State University (1973-1977) I worked in the store and traveled NW Ohio selling frozen ice cream novelties to grocery stores. After I graduated from BGSU in 1977, I traveled the Midwest USA selling Ice Cream machines, designing and bulding ice cream stores.

The frozen dessert was pulled from the market four months ago.Jamie Squire/Getty ImagesAt the end of this month, containers of Blue Bell ice cream, a staple in Texas and other states, will finally return to store shelves. The company’s ice cream has been absent from stores for four months after a wide recall over listeria concerns.

The rollout will happen gradually, reports member station KERA, beginning with Homemade Vanilla being sold in some Texas stores next Monday. Other flavors will soon follow; the company says it will expand distribution as it upgrades its production facilities.Reporting the news today, the Dallas Morning news added, “This is not a drill.”KERA’s Eric Aasen writes: “The first areas to get the ice cream? Brenham, where the company started in 1907, as well as Houston and Austin. Ice cream will also be sent to stores in Alabama (Birmingham and Montgomery), where the ice cream is being produced. North Texas and southern Oklahoma will be next, followed by stores in southwest Texas and central Oklahoma.”Before a succession of recalls hit Blue Bell this spring, the company had been selling its frozen desserts in 23 states.

The new plan calls for its products to re-enter markets in 15 states, KERA says. After the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said it had traced eight related cases of listeria over a period from 2011 to 2015, Blue Bell expanded a voluntary recall to include all of its products — including ice cream, frozen yogurt and sherbet — and all of its production plants.

How To Make Ice Cream-Stuffed Churro Donuts

CHURRO ICE CREAM-STUFFED MILKY BUNS

The Milky Bun….

………is a simple concept where ice cream fills the crevice of a nice warm donut. Combine that idea with a churro and you’ve got something extra special.Based on the popular donut created by Afters Ice Cream, Amy Erickson of Oh, Bite It made her own version of the Milky Bun by replacing the traditional donut for a Pillsbury grands biscuit.Erickson pan fried the biscuit so it created a donut-like consistency. She then opened up the biscuit to stuff it with vanilla ice cream and then sprinkled it with cinnamon-sugar for a churro effect. It might not be exactly like the Afters Milky Bun, but it looks just as delicious. For full directions and more insane recipes like this one, check out the Oh, Bite It blog.

Soft Serve Ice Cream: The Locals’ Best Kept Secret – The Reykjavik Grapevine

Soft Serve Ice Cream: The Local’s Best Kept Secret

Words byGuðrún JónsdóttirPhotos byJulia StaplesPublished August 9, 2015

Now, I realise how this may come off. Here I am, advocating ice cream consumption in Ice-land. Like we don’t get enough of “Do you just eat ice all the time?” and “Is ice your main export?” already. We do. I get it. Ha ha, Iceland. It’s funny. But I just can’t sit by and let this go on any longer. Us Icelanders all know it, and it’s time our visitors knew it, too: Icelandic soft serve is best in the world. Bezt í heimi, certified!First, let’s clarify one thing. When Icelanders talk about ice cream, we mean soft serve. While I celebrate the recent influx of different ice cream styles to Iceland (scoop-style, gelato, etc.), you probably came here expecting that patented Unique Icelandic Experience, so let’s stick to soft serve. When in Rome, eat gelato—when in Reykjavík, go for the soft serve.
